Introduction

www.dance-kids.org is a new, fun and educational website for kids who love dance. Kids can play games, look at some great pictures, learn about dance through the ages and in other countries, read some great stories and lots, lots more. It is a place for children to learn about dance in an informative and safe environment. Although children as young as 5 and as old as 10 will find this site interesting, it is aimed particularly at 6 to 9 year olds.

The website is brought to you by the ISTD Dance Examinations Board (ISTD). Formed in 1904 it is today a registered educational charity that covers the full spectrum of dance examinations on a truly global scale. To find out more about the ISTD visit www.istd.org

The guide below gives you a brief introduction to the different sections on the site and other useful information you may need to know. Please take the time to read.

Before introducing children to the site, it would be beneficial to spend some time looking at it yourself, so you know what is where and how to get around.

A range of games can be found in this section, all to be played online. There are mazes (Crazy Maze), crosswords (Wicked Words), sliding puzzles, pairs (Match Up), jumbled words to unscramble (Jumble), and a mystery game (to be changed on a regular basis). The rules are all clearly explained and should keep the kids amused for hours.

Kids Gallery
This section is devoted entirely to pictures received from the kids, whether it is something they coloured in - perhaps from Print to Play (see below) - or a picture they drew themselves. Once a picture has been placed on the site, it is then possible to do various things with it; you can make it become computer wallpaper, send it as a postcard to friends and family, turn it into a sliding puzzle game, vote for it as their favourite drawing and play around with it using our effects. These include changing the colour, magnifying sections of it and distorting it.

No picture can be accepted without a completed consent form. This should provide what information you would like to see accompany their pictures e.g. name, age etc.

We are sorry, but due to the number of drawings we expect to receive, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to post all of the drawings.

Print to Play
This section enables the kids to have fun away from the computer screen. By printing out the various games and activities we have on offer, they can be taken into the classroom, round to friends' houses or done at the kitchen table. Please be aware that some of the activities involve the use of scissors and glue.

The pages in Print to Play are PDF's (Portable Document Format). They have been created using the software Adobe Acrobat Reader. This Adobe technology is a popular way of formatting documents in such a way that they can be viewed and printed on multiple platforms. However, in order to print the pages you will have to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. This is entirely free and can be downloaded simply and quickly by clicking on the icon below and following the instructions. If you have any problems please contact our webmaster for advice.

Once you have installed it, or if you already have Acrobat Reader, by clicking on the icon for your chosen game, the PDF will automatically open and all you then have to do is Print.

Safe Surf and Web Smart
These two sections of www.dance-kids.org will be very useful for both you and the kids to read. They contain useful information on staying safe whilst surfing the World Wide Web and a series of definitions of words relating to computers and the Internet. You may even find something here that you didn't know! Please also see the section below for some Safe Surf tips for yourselves.

Safe Surf: A Guide for Adults
We at www.dance-kids.org are very concerned that children should be able to use the Internet safely. Most of the information available on the Internet is harmless, but there are places unsuitable for children just as there are in real life.

Below are just a few ideas for you to help keep your children safe. Please ensure that the children have read our Safe Surf Golden Rules and are clear about all that is mentioned. Take the time to explain anything they are unsure about.

  • Don't forget to be close at hand when your child is using the Internet. Just as you wouldn't send children to the cinema by themselves yet, it's important to be with them - or at least nearby - when they explore the Internet. Therefore you may like to put the computer in a place where you can easily see what is going on. That way, they can be 'independent' but not alone.

  • Make use of the tools that are available to help you choose what you do and don't want your children to see. There are products available that can filter out content unsuitable for children. You may like to consider using a filtering program or restricting them to sites that you locate via a child-safe search engine. Another option is a child-friendly browser. There are also hotlines where parents can report any very nasty material (e.g. child pornography).

  • Make sure your children do not give out any personal information about themselves without your knowledge and consent to people who they may be meeting online. Never let them arrange to meet someone they have met online in an offline environment without you knowing.

  • You need to be concerned about how long they are spending on the computer. Be sure that time spent on the computer and the Internet doesn't take away from all other activities. Therefore limit the amount of time your children spend online, and encourage them to keep up their other activities (including schoolwork) and friendships. One way to deal with the issue of spending too much time on the Internet might be through the use of a software time-limiting tool.

  • Take the time to find the best and most useful sites for you and your children.

  • Learn as much as you can about the Internet yourself. Surfing should be a family activity so that you can find your way around together and discuss any problems you encounter.
